New chip-scale gyroscope measures rotation with unprecedented sensitivity

Summary: Engineers developed a compact integrated microresonator Brillouin laser ring gyroscope capable of detecting slow rotation down to thirty-seven degrees per hour on a chip platform. Shrinking high-precision optical gyroscopes onto photonic integrated circuits provides immediate fabrication routes for drift-free autonomous navigation, aerospace positioning, and defense systems without requiring GPS signals or bulky fiber-optic coils.
