HERO generates steady 700°C heat in under three minutes from hydrogen and oxygen without combustion or fuel cells

"water  the only output... globally patented catalyst that quickly heats up in the presence of H2 and O2 and then reverts to its original state with zero degradation... patented non-toxic catalyst, a trade secret, from relatively common elements... uses only tiny amounts of electricity to power switches, pumps and gauges... food giant Mars and packaging company TrendPac are running pilot projects... can use with green air-cooled supercritical CO2 turbines... one-tenth size of equivalent steam turbine"

Simon Derricutt commented:

"they're trying to make this out as something new, but the real news here is that they've got a cheap catalyst that starts working at room temperature and is OK up to 700°C (doesn't degrade too much at high temperature). Otherwise, you could do much the same thing with platinised Asbestos that's been around for a very long time, though that needs a bit of heat before it works. Still, they say it's not burning Hydrogen, but that is what is actually happening here, it's just burning without a flame.

"Not exactly a big break-through, though it's sold as that. You still have the problems of needing to supply the Hydrogen for it to burn. As you know, the big problem for Hydrogen is really the cost, though there are problems with energy density and the round-trip energy loss involved as well as safety hassles. Most Hydrogen today is made from natural gas, because that's the cheapest way of getting it, with "green" Hydrogen about 5x more expensive. Even with the Hydrogen coming from natural gas, the cost of heating using it is still quite a bit more than the natural gas it was made from, since you're chucking away the energy from burning the Carbon in CH4 (and still producing just as much CO2 as if you burnt it). Funny thing is that H2O is the major greenhouse gas anyway, and for some reason that fact is ignored to concentrate on CO2 which is two orders of magnitude less effect.

"So yep, this HERO will work, probably exactly to their specifications, but it's still going to cost you more to run it and it won't have any measurable effect on climate." http://disq.us/p/2wd5swl
